SHRM Certification
The Society for Human Resource Management provides two options for HR certification--the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP. The SHRM-CP certification is designed for HR professionals who are engaged primarily in an operational role—implementing policies, serving as the HR point of contact for staff and stakeholders, and/or performing day-to-day HR functions. The SHRM-SCP certification is designed for HR professionals at a senior level who operate primarily in a strategic role—developing policies and strategies, overseeing the execution of HR operations, analyzing performance metrics, and/or contributing to the alignment of HR strategies to organizational goals. For more information regarding the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP certifications, visit https://www.shrm.org/certification.
HRCI Certification
The HR Certification Institute provides three certification options--the Professional in Human Resources (PHR), the Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) and the Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR). To be eligible for the PHR, SPHR or GPHR exam, you must have at least two years of HR exempt-level experience as a practitioner, educator, researcher, or consultant. The PHR exam consists of HR generalist information at the operational and technical level, or ”nuts and bolts” level. The SPHR exam addresses HR generalist information at the strategic and policy level. The HR Certification Institute strongly recommends that candidates taking the PHR exam have at least two years of exempt-level HR experience, and candidates seeking SPHR certification have at least six years of exempt-level HR experience. For more information regarding the exam and the application process, visit the HR Certification Institute website at www.hrci.org.
