hr professional certification

HR professional certification is available through the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and the HR Certification Institute.  Obtaining HR certification through one or both organizations sets you apart from colleagues, shows your dedication to the HR field and your mastery of HR knowledge and skills.  Your certification is also valuable to your organization, keeping you more competitive in today's economy.

HRATV STUDY GROUP
New group forming this April -- Click here to join!

You will not be alone in preparing for the exam!! HRATV is dedicated to assisting eligible members who wish to take up the challenge of the certification exams. HRATV supports its members seeking certification by organizing study groups. If you are interested in joining a study group, please contact either Stefanie Thiel, SHRM-SCP, or Justy Thomas, SHRM-SCP  (their contact information can be found in the Membership Directory).  The mission of the Human Resources Association of Treasure Valley is to promote professional excellence in the development of those who are qualified and wish to pursue their Professional Certification. In support of that mission, the organization awards scholarships to members who are studying for certification.  Click here for additional scholarship information.

“The study group was a very helpful support system, and it really got my studies off to a great start. I especially appreciated the way we took the practice tests together in the online study portal and talked through the feedback we received. Thank you to the facilitators and presenters who took time to share their expertise with us!”  -- Jennifer R

SHRM Certification

The Society for Human Resource Management provides two options for HR certification--the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP.   The SHRM-CP certification is designed for HR professionals who are engaged primarily in an operational role—implementing policies, serving as the HR point of contact for staff and stakeholders, and/or performing day-to-day HR functions. The SHRM-SCP certification is designed for HR professionals at a senior level who operate primarily in a strategic role—developing policies and strategies, overseeing the execution of HR operations, analyzing performance metrics, and/or contributing to the alignment of HR strategies to organizational goals.  For more information regarding the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP certifications, visit https://www.shrm.org/certification.

HRCI Certification

The HR Certification Institute provides three certification options--the Professional in Human Resources (PHR), the Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) and the Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR).  To be eligible for the PHR, SPHR or GPHR exam, you must have at least two years of HR exempt-level experience as a practitioner, educator, researcher, or consultant. The PHR exam consists of HR generalist information at the operational and technical level, or ”nuts and bolts” level. The SPHR exam addresses HR generalist information at the strategic and policy level. The HR Certification Institute strongly recommends that candidates taking the PHR exam have at least two years of exempt-level HR experience, and candidates seeking SPHR certification have at least six years of exempt-level HR experience.  For more information regarding the exam and the application process, visit the HR Certification Institute website at www.hrci.org.
